Mouldy chocolate??

Options
Ok so bought a tin of Quality Street foor Chrimbo. Sat down with the kids to watch a movie yesterday and decided to crack the tin open. The chooclates are white! And the soft centres are rock hard! It looks like the chocolates may have gone off, but the tin is well in date. I stored the tin in the back of a cupboard in the kitchen so am not sure if it is something I have done or whether they should be frog marched back to the shop for an exchange? Any clues as to why the chocolates are inedible? They haven't been stored in direct sunlight, near a radiator etc??

They often get a white coating on them if there has been a lot of changes in temp. If you are unhappy though then take them back.

The white isn't harmful, if it were me I'd still eat them but you should get an exchange if you take them back.

Thanks for replying. The change in temperature can only have occurred in the shop becuase they have been sat at room temperature in the back of the cupboard since I bought them in October. They don't really taste of anything much so the flavour is impaired, and the soft centres are rock hard so maybe they have got too cold whilst being trasported to the supermarket? Who knows? I will take them back and ask for an exchange but thanks for putting my mind at rest x
  • The white coating on chocolate is called bloom, and is usually due to production/storage at incorrect temperatures. Either too cold OR too warm. Can be caused by a damp environment as well. They're still edible but won't be as nice, as you've found.

I would try to return them if I still had the receipt. It's been over a month so the shop could claim it was poor storage on your part, but hopefully will exchange them for you.
