You can sometimes get around this is you already have family living there though as there are a few different types of migration visa/working permits that you can apply for.

Thanks for clarifying that up tightgit, I was getting excited that I may be able to immigrate at last then ! lol

Don't take my word for it ,but I know several people that have gone to other European countries to work without any prevoius applications.

It's certainly worth discussing your options with an advisor, even if you just go bankrupt before you leave the country, at least you can start to rebuild your lives without having to worry about covering your tracks and being paranoid when you come back to the UK?

Out of interest, if they were to go bankrupt and the leave the country would they have to come back several times for court etc.

Thanks mattp I might begin to look into it again.....:)

I know £13k doesn't seem to be a huge amount of debt compared to some other people on here, but it's a BIG hurdle for us, ie: limited income etc, and we have no chance of clearing it quickly unless we win lottery (don't play it lol), or get left some money in a will ...not that I wish any badwill on member of our family!! lol

But thanks to everyone on this site thru their experiences and advice we are getting there, all 'creditors' contacted and repayment plans agreed, only the water board left to tackle :) (they aren't being very receptive to my offers of repayment)

Karma67, we are looking to emmigrate, either to Canada or NZ when our debts are cleared and were told that we had to have sufficient savings to support ourselves for at least 3 months in Canada. So, its not just about clearing your debts but you must have savings too!

Thanks Malestrom, you've just clarified what I originally thought!

Oh well maybe i will get to emmigrate just before I'm become an OAP!
  • Because I am a canadian citizen my husband was accepted to be a permanent resident, with a view to taking out full citizenship in 3 years. As he is my spouse and I am 'sponsoring' him, we didn't have to prove income/savings/get a job before we came etc.

As part of the EU you can move to Eire lock, stock and barrel without any questions asked apart from showing your passport on your way in.

I have just been to national debtline - and they are fab!! They information is great, forms/letters are fab and they have shown me what to do!

Thanks for the recommendation - filling out budget sheets now, letters to creditors in a few days and making a plan!

I just did a search for 'new zealand' and so having been reading through this thread - and I just wanted to say that we've just been given permanent residency visas (last month).... and we have a huge mortgage and a £7000 loan, plus the money that I borrowed in order to apply for our visas!! At no time did I have to prove the fact that we could support ourselves (although we would be able to with the proceeds of our house sale), and debts were never even enquired about.

We will be going debt-free (again thanks to a house sale), but NZIS had no interest in this.

    I think you've been misinformed!

    Best of luck,

    Steph
