Tax Payable for Temporary Job

I think I may be starting a temporary job in January.
So far for the 2011/12 tax year I have had no taxable income.
I believe my gross income for the three months up to 31st March could be around £7,000 - which is below the personal allowance.
Is it likely that my new employer would deduct tax at 20% as standard and I would need to claim that back from HMRC?

Tax will most likely be deducted at basic rate or Week 1 for the first few weeks until the pay office get a coding notice from HMRC which should also trigger a refund.
You say you had no taxable income but JSA and contributions based ESA is classed as taxable income.
If you need to apply for a refund you can do it via a P50 after 6th April.0 -
If you have been on a taxable benefit then they will issue a P45 give this to your employer, if the P45 is late ask for a P46 and select option B you will then be put on 747L on a week 1 month 1 basis untill they hear from the tax office when any adjustment required will be made.
If you have not had any taxable income ask for a P46 and select option A you will then be put on 747L on a cumulative basis which will proberbly be the correct tax code for you but if it is not again the tax office will advise your employer and any adjustments will then be made.
The P46 should be offered by all employers if a P45 is not handed in but not all do this so you may have to ask for one, or get your own from here.
