Called into training

Every Friday I am posted my timesheet for the next week's work. I have just received a call from head office saying I need to be there on Wednesday afternoon for training. This was not on my timesheet and so I have made other plans for that time.

There is nothing in my contract about how much notice is required for things like this. Is there any requirement in law for the amount of notice work need to give me?

If I refuse to attend due to making other plans as they did not inform my on my timesheet, could the legally do anything to punish me?

Many thanks for your help.

Why would Wednesday afternoon be an issue? Surely you would be work anyway at that time? I would be inclined to cancel your personal plans and attend the training. If you refuse to attend the training then you could be disciplined which could result in a warning or worse. Surely the timesheet is there to mark down the hours that you have worked, I wouldnt have thought that it would be used to notify you of training requirements. I think you company have given you sufficient notice.

If they don't like your haircut, you can be disciplined. But it is not worth worrying about.

From the context, the time sheet is the part of the agreed protocol for instructing the OP on hours worked. Plainly the employer has not had the foresight to include the training. So I would say that the Employer should lump it.

They can ask nicely, but if OP has taken the timesheet in good faith and does not want to rearrange, that should be the end of the matter and any decent employer would respect that.

We are actually breeding disrespectful employers by suggesting that employees should drop every time an employer demands that the employee turns up outside of hours. Many employers tend to regard the agreed working hours as sacred unto themselves - and rightly so. But with that goes the need to respect the employees own time.
