Re-training to be a Social Worker - advice please

Hi All,

I will start by saying I am 29 and currently pregnant - due to give birth in April 2012.
I currently work in an Advice and Guidance role for a local authority, and have done for 5 years, so do have some 'on the job' social care experience which I believe could help me in my studies.

I have been toying with the idea of studying for a Social Work degree for some time, but its always been finances that have stopped me. I have recently read about the Grants available through the NHS to study for a social work degree. Does anyone know if these cover part time courses?

Also, is it a bit unrealistic expecting to study part time with a new baby? I plan to 12 months off work.

Any advice or help is really appreciated

The theoretical study would be possible but you could have problems with doing the practical placements part time. Have you checked that there's a university near you offering a part time degree in Social Work?

if your employer was willing to sponsor you and could provide the placements that are necessary to qualify as a social worker then you could study through the Open University.
