Why is the advice now to contact an electrician when needing any electrical work done but years ago people used to do it themselves. What has changed about electricity that it is more dangerous now?

Who says you have to get an electrician? I've never seen anywhere that you MUST get a sparky for ALL electrical work. They are only needed for any notifiable work...

Any DIY articles in magazines and newspapers now all seem to come with a caveat that a qualified electrician should do any work. This is advised for anything more complex than changing a plug.

They are just covering their backsides in case someone decides they want to sue as they've blown themselves up.
