What can I do to get rid of grey hair?

I am hoping that you can help me. For many years I have had two colours (highlights and lowlights) through my hair. My hair has quite a bit of grey and I now have highlights, lowlights and grey hair. Not a good look!

I asked my hairdresser about a semi-permanent colour all over then highlights through the crown. She said that semi-permanent colours always come out darker than the shade card and probably wouldn't cover the grey. I like having highlights that is why I don't want an all over colour. Can anyone give me some advice?

Can you not just have more highlights to cover the grey?

Permanent colour for grey hair should do the trick.

I have been fighting the war against the dreaded grey for years. I started getting grey hair before I was 30. I blame my dad.

Anyway, I do it at home myself. I do have quite short hair which helps. I mostly use a semi-permanent. At the moment, I am fond of Herbashine in Medium Brown. It is supposed to work in 10 minutes but I leave it about half an hour to cover my roots. The colour does come out quite dark but that was what I was originally.

I re-do about every 5 weeks when I have a cut. The colour is still quite nice on the ends but the roots are horrendous!

Thank you for all your replies. Over the years I have had more and more colour added but still the dreaded grey comes through. I didn't realise that I could have a permanent colour and then some highlights. How does this work, does it mean that some hair is colour twice?
  • you will get your highlights put in then the rest coloured. that is the best way to cover the greys.

I would bother with semi-permanent (as long as you are sure about the colour and yes, go lighter, as, with permanent dyes at least, they always come out darker than on the box (in my experience))

I used to have my hair tinted and foils added, but it all got v expensive as I got grey roots after 2 weeks (my hair grows quickly and I started going grey at about 23, thanks Mum!!). I switched to getting my hair cut and coloured (all over root tint) every 5-6 weeks, but I also do my own root tint every 2 weeks, to cover the greys. Not having highlights took some getting used to, but I found a nice shade of mid brown that suits me and now I don't miss my expensive highlights. The "modern" tints, esp the professional ones, have different tones in, so my hair never looks like a "block" colour now :D

I just do not feel quite ready for that yet. Although the front of my hair seems to quite grey (going by the regrowth), the back is still very dark. I think that the half and half look will be very aging. I am not brave enough to give it a go! Although sometimes I do feel that I am fighting a losing battle.

My hairdresser, who is a little younger than me but not much, says I can go grey when she does. She then says that is never:)

Same here. Hair started to turn a silvery white when I was in my teens. I'm 37 now and am fed up of the constant battle so decided to cut my hair short and embrace the natural colour I'm meant to be. It's a full on silver, short and cute crop. Goes well with my grey/green eyes :D
Smashed through my weightloss target. Looking at 120lbs+ loss. BMI over 40 down to 20.5. Training hard to get body fat under 20%, not far to go now :j
