Private Towing Companies

Hi MSE Forum,
last night i was towed for parking illegally. Totally guilty it was somewhere where i had always used as a little sneaky spot, but the residents must have become disgruntled (which is fair enough) and employed a clamping/towing company to police their street.
I parked my car at 19.00 hrs and came back at around 22.00 hrs to find it gone. I called the clamping company on the number i found on a lampost quite high up and they informed me i would have to pay £340 cash for the release of the vehicle. Now as i said i did park there so getting towed away was my fault but howcome the council charge £105 for towing you away and these legalised criminals can charge £340.
My car was clamped at 19.10 hrs and taken away at 20.10 hrs so they didnt hang about.
The company that towed me away was inter park based in solihull?
I'm not emailing to complain about being towed but to be carless in the middle of birmingham, then to get back into town in the morning faced with a £340 bill is not what you need and is there anyway to get any of this back?
Hope you can understand my frustrations
Kind Regards
