Espresso maker (gaggia) help please

:) I bought OH a Gaggia Classic as a present but we've never made coffee on a fancy machine :p

I'm pretty certain the double espresso basket is blocked. And we're now using the single shot filter cup with it but it's also supposed to have a fancy function where you can have dry coffee grounds but mine always have a layer of water across the top after I have pulled a shot. (something to do with the triple valve thing).

Anyone own one that can help me before I give up and send it back to Amazon as I'm sure it's not working as it should (or have I done something wrong??)

    well, after a bit of playing around, the filter is really stuck and will be sending the whole thing back to amazon. what a shame as we were really looking forward to it.

    I had an old version of this - what exactly do you mean by blocked? The design may have changed, but I'm struggling to visualise what could have happened.

    I put the portafilter on the machine with no coffee and water doesn't come out so guessing something is wrong there.

    right - something's definitely wrong there. Is the bottom of the portafilter blocked then?

    I guess if it needs to go back anyway then it's fairly academic.
