Tax calculation

Are HMRC very late in sending out the tax calculations this year?

OH submitted his SA return (paper) in late July but has heard nothing since. I think he has usually heard from them by this time in previous years.

I have calculated how much he is due to pay, so it won't be a shock, just a bit worrying that he has head nothing.

I sent in one after that and received a calculation, having said that it was a short return which is scanned by computer.

Maybe a phone call to check receipt would be in order

Any reason why you're not doing it online? I've found mine get turned round within a couple of weeks.

I advise using electronic means at all times. It can take 12 weeks for post to be opened, mail for some tax offices in the Midlands gets routed via Cardiff and so on !! So we have mail trucks ferrying the backlog around the country and losing mail. Against my advice, one client kept paying PAYE by mail and ended up bitterly regretting it when one went missing and HMRC started fining her for faliure to submit. If you register online, you can check for yourself whether the return has been booked against your account.

Always keep the date and time stamps when you submit online. I've had four separate instances where HMRC deleted submitted returns, then fined the client £100 for late submission. Faced with the evidence of the date and time stamps from their own database, they had to stop accusing me of failing to submit and take all the fines off.

Unfortunately he has tried several times to register to do it on-line, but there seems to be a problem. It says he is already registered, yet he has no details to access the system, and it will not accept his UTR to let him start over.

He has contacted them several times about it in the past, they say they have reset something, yet he still cannot get anywhere. So he gave up and just sends in the paper form.

Will give them another week then get him to ring them.

He does have some "foreign income", these pages seem to be referred somewhere special, so that may be the hold up.

One imagines that as the number of paper Returns have dramatically reduced ...... so have the staff allocated to deal with them. And it will be far from the first time that people haven't had a calculation by the following 31/1.
I have calculated how much he is due to pay

......... so, if it gets that bad - simply pay that sum by 31/1. I remember previous posts from you regarding the difficulties with registration. So you can't pay via a 'one off' Direct Debit, as that has to be set up online via the SA registration. But payment by Billpay is as good - provided you specify the UTR. It now intimates BillPay payments take 3 days to reach HMRC. Which is misleading - as HMRC then credit the payment with an effective date of '3 working days prior' when they process the file! So you can safely pay up to 30/1.

Yep, I have the payment details set up on our current account, so can pay towards the end of January.

The amount this year is under £1000, and he has paid more than .....is it 80%?...whatever.....under PAYE, so there should be no more POAs due. Plus they have just reduced the tax code on his main pension to BR, so less to pay afterwards next year.

We have just changed our BT contract to include all (more or less) UK calls, so he can now call the pesky 0845 numbers free. Good for calling HMRC.

It's quicker / safer via BillPay. As HMRC accounts don't accept Faster payments.

But if you do use a bill payment via your account - make sure the UTR is in the Reference field. ;)

When you call them to ask for electronic access, take a written record of:

    1. Phone number you called.
    2. Date an time.
    3. Name of person you spoke to.
    4. Which office they were physically sitting in at the time.

I have several clients who have been thankful for this advice, as it meant that fines which were levied for non-submission had to be wiped when HMRC were confronted with the fact that the client had done his or her part to comply with their silly system.

Yes, payment set up and used these last few years with UTR in Reference field.

Money already set aside so will probably pay on 24th January.
