Why do supermarkets display meat prices per kilo ?

I want to know how much the the chicken costs not what the price is per kg.

I know they show both prices but it can be easy to make mistakes (as my other half demonstrated this week).

Part of trading legislation ( to make pricing comparisons easier ) , so dont blame the supermarkets

I think the OP is asking a different question, as in;

Why do supermarkets put a big sticker on a 1.5 kg chicken (for example) that reads '£3.00' in BIG BOLD TYPE with 'per kg' printed underneath in teeny little type, rather than just put a big sticker on it that reads '£4.50'?

I suspect that it is a rhetorical question, as I would have though it was expletive deleted obvious why any supermarket would want to give the impression that the chicken in question is a bargain at £3 to buy when in fact costs £4.50.

i was gonna type that too - they shouldn't really highlight the price per kilo as though it is the price of the chicken/joint of meat etc - they should stop that and put the actual price of the item on the big sticker... its like advertising a car at £50 and then in small print putting "the price of a tank full of petrol", meanwhile the car costs £5,000.

All supermarkets are out to confuse, not to mention the suppliers and everyone concerned with removing money from your pocket.
Be aware and watch other shoppers.

I can't understand what is your confusion...
I think it is a good idea to get per kg cost. You will find that sometimes the smaller package actual cheaper than the bigger one on offer, or loose veg would be cheaper than those pre-pack in bags.

It's even worse with tomatoes. In Morrisons one pack will contain 4 tomatoes and be labeled 4 tomatoes, stating x pence per tomatoe. Another pack will be labeled x grams of tomatoes and have the price per kilo.

The packaging is different too, so the only way you could work it out is to take them out of the package (the 4 pack) and weigh them.
