I guess it depends on the car.

Two weeks ago I help get £1300 off a new (1021 miles) Corsa.

    Ended up paying £6,695

Then secretly scratch the paintwork when they aren't looking and ask for another £500 off to get the paint repaired.

Then go around telling the other dealers that someone has offered another £500 off and are they willing to beat it.

In the end they will give you the car for free, but your mobile, fax and petrol bills will amount to £9,000.

Have you looked at buying your car online? I tried it but was too impatient to wait for delivery and I couldn't chose the colour I wanted.

Does it come with 'fre' insurance, if it does check out the policy excess, the excess is usually about as much as you'd expect to pay for a years policy.

Is it possible to get this type of car from other garages, if so I would say "I have been offered an identical car for £7995 from another garage, I feel more confident buying from here what is the best price, I would expect at least £500-700 off.

We looked at buying a brand new car about 18 months ago, arranegd a test drive gave telephone details said we'd think about it and mr salesman phoned with a better price 3 days later, £300 off his "best price" depends how patient you can be and how much you want that particular car.
  • I was looking at the mazda6 a few months ago. I went to the mazda site and harvested all the dealers email addresses.

Then mailed them all on bcc aksing for their best price. Only about 25% replied - but this was still loads. I then mailed the ones who responded back with the best price l have been quoted and asked them to beat it. Only about 25% of these replied beating it.

Then l emailed my local dealer and told them the best best price, and they beat it as well.

Total off the £20000 car was £3400 off brand new. Problem was by the time l had done this l had changed me mind about the car ::)

Worked a dream though. Even if your local dealer won't beat it - just work out how much it will cost in fuel to drive to that dealer 300 miles away who is £200 cheaper - is it worth it to you? To me l travel so much it's not big deal if it saves me a few hundred - l could even use the saving to stay in a hotel and make a weekend away out of it. ;D
    Sense is not common.

why do you have to buy a NEW car?? why not a couple of years old and that way save thousands to start with.

saying that, my son bought a new car cash got £800 off it and paid £5,500 for it (focus a few years ag)

it came with free tax and insurance, so he kept the car for about 10 months sold it for about what he paid for it and bought another new one and so on, so he hasnt paid any tax and insurance for about 8 years now and is always driving this years model. hardly ever loses on a deal as well as the depreciation is usually covered by the discount he gets.

he says just walk out of the showroom after waving the notes at the salesman, 9 times out of 10 they call you back, if not go to another one,

he just goes to the same guy now, as they know him
  • some new cars have 0% finance deals. I was looking at the renault megane. you pay 35% of the £10,000 price up front, then £140 or so per month then a final sum. It would probably be cheaper for me to do this than take a loan for a nearly new car.

Check http://www.honestjohn.co.uk look for the link to 'This weeks Best deals'

Also http://www.whatcar.com have 'Target' prices, so you'll have an idea, whats realistic - but you should still be able to beat it!

Which car & model is it - I'll see what I can come up with, too!

Best if you can do your homework on-line & buy from a local dealer, for peace of mind!!
