letter titled
Most employees pay the right amount of tax. Do you?
Is this just a normal letter sent by HMRC? I already told them about my interest for last year and they have my PAYE details from both employer. Anything else I should be doing for this letter?
Bear in mind the letter was dated 19 Nov and I was sent a letter of new tax code taking into account my savings interest details on the 20th Nov.

A "friend of mine" received this yesterday and has a bit of guilty conscience. He says he's been paying higher rate tax for a few years now (which is surprising because he is lazy and a bit stupid). He says no bank ever asked him about his tax rate, so he's continued to pay the standard 20% on his savings (he's always had a few thousand in the bank which doesn't surprise me because he's very stingy). If he gets in touch with them, will he be liable to pay the difference for all the time since he became higher rate?
He doesn't know the significance of gift-aid in all this (it's mentioned in the letter) but he's been paying a monthly direct debit to Oxfam for many years - can anyone advise him on what to do next?0 -
I get income tax taken off at source by my pension provider as they have done for the last 14 years. Recently I rec'd a letter from tax people saying I hadn't paid tax on what was obviously TWICE my last years pension. I have my pension providers written evidence for correct tax taken off. I was incensed, I wrote back to them asking them to do their calcs again and to write to me ASAP how they came to send me such a incorrect assessment, especially as it came from a different office to the last 14 years!
To all here, check your tax demand and if you suspect it's incorrect write to them and tell them. Personally I think they have been ordered to write to all and sundry telling them they owe tax and hoping they'll pay up. But we have no choice as they told me it (10% of my pension!) WOULD be taken off 2011/12 pension. I await their reply.0
