Wisdom teeth

Hi
I've got a really painful back left wisdom tooth coming through at the moment and its absolutely killing me. Its about 3/4 of the way through but the flap of gum that is covering it slightly has gone into an ulcer and is now rubbing against the tooth itself. Sorry if this has put anyone off their breakfast! I've been to the dentist previously with wisdom tooth problems and every time I've been they've just sent me away telling me to use Bonjela and mouthwash. I always feel as thou I'm wasting their time. If anybody has any ideas on how to relieve the pain (I've tried Ambesol liquid anaesthetic and have been using mouthwash after cleaning teeth so far) I'd be really grateful.
Love,
An in pain Sam

hot salt water mouthwash on the hour, every hour!
If it stsrts to get infected, you may need antibiotics.
You will keep biting on the annoying flap of gum which inflames it even more.

We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.0 -
Cut the flap off, my dentist sort of filed mine down with a bit of numbing and then gave me a bit of gauze to bite on. Problem solved!0

Doesn't always work, as it can grow back.
Lots of salty mouthwashes as Linda said, and on a day by day basis, keep the area as clean as you possibly can.
How old are you, and how long has it been troublesome?
EDIT - from the 1985 bit in your name, are you 22 by any chance? Prime time for wisdom tooth trouble is between 18 and 25. If your dentist doesn't seem too worried, it is probably straight, and there is probably room for it to come through, so having it out isn't really a worry.
Just manage it until it comes fully through, and then you'll be OK.
You'll now know why babies cry when their teething though!!!How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
This ones for Toothsmith...
Tomorrow I (finally) have a hospital appointment to have an upper wisdom tooth out. I've tolerated the pain since August 2006, and have been permanently doped up on Solpadol since then.
Have you any advice for me? Other than being instructed to take my pain killers an hour before the appointment, what else 'should' I do?
Thanks.
(By the way I'm 43, and the tooths only just decided to grow).0 -
I had two of my wisdom teeth removed as they were causing me pain. My Dentist told me that if you have complained more than three times hey can remve the wisdom teeth. My Dentist removed both mine and I have been pain free ever since. Before that I used Dentanox to rub on the gum and took Tramadol or Co Proxamol for the pain.Competitions wins 2010

May I answer?
Is it with local anaesthetic only? If so, make sure you have a good meal beforehand so that you dont feel faint during or after the procedure. Afterwards, pay close attention to the instructions you will be given with regard to pain relief and keeping the area clean and you will be fine. Good luck!0 -

Upper ones are generally not as bad as lower. But don't quote me on that!!!!!
Be patient, and be prepared for it to be a bit uncomfortable for a while.
The soreness after having it out is generally no worse than anything you'll have suffered from it, and you'll have the great relief of knowing it's the last time it will bother you!
Do as your surgeon, or the nurses tell you, and REST for the day or two afterwards. How to find a dentist.

HOW RELIEVED AM I? Lah-de-dah. It's out!
Just back from the hospital, yes mouth's still numb, but it's gone. The bane of my life has GONE. Boy I could've danced round the room with joy when it popped out!
Yes, I guess my face will ache when the numbness wears off, but you know what, it can't feel as bad as tolerating the agony of that damned wisdom tooth nagging like it has for the past few months.
