Notice for Temporary Work

Bit of advice please :)

I started a temporary role in retail in early November but have now been offered a perm job with far better prospects.
Verbally resigned yesterday and will take in the written one today. They are saying I need to do 2 weeks notice which after only being in role for 3 weeks seems OTT. I can start in the new role as soon as I am out of the current role so the sooner the better. If I leave before the 2 weeks which they are saying I should complete what will this mean? I will do the 2 weeks if I must but would prefer not to if possible

Thanks

You can give immediate notice if you wish unless your signed written employment contract says otherwise.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

thanks HappyMJ. Contract was never signed but I have received one by post which actually says 4 weeks but the manager I spoke to yesterday said 2 weeks.

If I am contractually obliged to the 2/4 weeks what could happen if I give immediate notice?

    Not true.

There is still a requirement to give reasonable notice under common law even if employed for less than a month.

if you do not, you could in theory be sued for breach of contract.
  • If it's the same agency/company that I was with - they said that they wanted a 2 week notice but I have before given them 1 week and it was fine. If they still need someone, they'll just ask for another temp.
