Pumpkin Patch Sale Question

Options
Was in Pumpkin Patch, Victoria Square today, they had a 40% sale on - thought happy days.

Woman in queue before me was questioning the staff over an item she had just bought - I though nothing off it till I got home and looked at the two items I had purchased.

They both had a pricing-gun sticker over the original factory product label/price tag, when I peeled off sticker - for example the price gun sticker said £8. underneath on its factory clothing label it said £5.50. I paid £4.80 (40% off £8.) Surely you can't reprice products higher and then tell customers its 40% off when really they would have been paying £3.30 on its original line price during the sale.

Is this legal?

I'm not sure of the legalities apart from a shop can sell an item to you at whatever price they fancy (or not sell in the case of 1p items in Tesco) but as for advertising a sale item that has had the price jacked up, I'm not sure. I think to advertise a discount they have to have sold the item in a certain number of stores at the higher price for a certain amount of time but again, not 100% sure.

My jaw dropped reading your post and my gut reaction would be to contact Trading Standards and see what they say. Not sure what would happen if you contact PP Head Office direct - maybe they'll shut you up with a voucher?

From my experience contacting Trading Standards in NI is a complete waste of time. They will send you a standard letter saying they haven't got the resources to investigate every complaint and thet they have to prioritise their workload to deal with major issues.

True but how are they to know that the OP has spread the 'good' news online and that I, who shops there occassionally, will now take my custom elsewhere if that's the kind of underhanded ploys they use?
  • Report them, they deserve it. In my opinion Pumpkin Patch are next on the list of shops going into administration. I believe Cruise Clothing, BHS and Clinton Cards will be with them. Anyway I digress. I just wanted to advise people against ordering online with PP.

I placed an order. No email confirmation received and no despatch information either. As a habitual online shopper I find that unacceptable. However the order did arrive a few days later.

The order was missing one of the items and they had printed that its out of stock. Wasnt out of stock when I ordered. They have however charged me for the item. I tried phoning them but you get a voicemail. Also unacceptable in this day and age. I've been waiting since Tuesday for them to call me. I decided to return some of the items but the despatch note doesnt include the prices. You could say this isnt an issue but they require the customer to fill in the prices on the returns form. There is also no option to login to look at an order placed.

Never again will I deal with them.
  • My advice is to forget the acclaimed savings you see at retailers and just decide whether you are content to pay the final price. Too many claimed reductions are from over inflated initial marked prices!

I was in the store last week and saw all the '40% off Entire Shop' signs, double checked them and there was no mention of not including sale. So bought full outfit for my daughter, guy rang it through till and when I questioned the lack of 40% discount I was told sale wasn't included.

    Isn't that false advertising?
