Owe Money to Employer

Sorry if in wrong area.
basically i owe a wage advance to an ex employer. I contacted payroll for the company and told me that money had gone straight out of wages, unfornatley i was lied to and had budgeted money accordingly from last wage packet.
now after having a voicemail left by my ex manager threathing to phone the police about this what can they do?
i phoned the police, and they say its a civil matter, i drafted a letter to my ex employer advising them that i cannot pay straight away and will send in due course..
advice welcome please

It is a civil matter. Theft requires the intention to permanently deprive.
Your ex employer could sue you and, assuming you do actually owe the money, would win.
However if you do not have the means to pay a court would simply order you to pay in instalments that the court feel you could afford.
Therefore if you offer to pay at a sensible rate it makes no sense at all for the employer to sue.0 -
It means that because you want to pay the money back you can't be accused of theft.0

Send them a letter offering to pay it back at £X amount per month and then stick to it. Unless you cannot afford it don't do something silly like £1 a month and I would suggest if you can aim to pay it back within 6 months.The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

thank you all. just when i recieved voicemail i got panicked.
i phoned 101 (police) non emergency and they said its a civil matter. but im worried as its a big company (harvester) mitchell + butlers brand0
