Being green has saved me lots of money

How has being green saved you lots of money.

Having read "Save Cash and Save the Planet"

I really learnt how being green and saving money can really go hand in hand.

Here are the things that I have done that makes me greener and save money at the same time.

Magazines - 25p each at charity shop (also return them back for resell).
Clothes - Free from friends that are bored with some of what they have.
Large dubbish - FreeCycle - no longer need to pay coucil to take stuff to dump when someone from freecycle would reuse it and take it off my hands.
Bulbs - £9 each year saved on bills + much less frequest changes.
Furniture - Free from friends / junk shops - Old furniture is just build to last for 10s of years rather than the new stuff.

What have you done that makes you greener that is also saving you lots of money.

Can I buy it & shared it with a friend or neighbour?

You could get rid of computer and internet and go to library or use a friend's computer.

Get rid of TV and watch a friend's TV if required.

    NEVER!!!!!!!!! :rotfl:
  • If you're not sure whether or not you need a telly, consider these options:

    * If you have a computer, remember you can catch a lot of programmes on YouTube. Also, you can watch DVD'S on some computers. My friend does this, and doesn't bother with a telly. Imagine the amount of money she must save on not paying for a tv license and on her electricity bills!

*If you hardly ever watch telly, why not do without one and just ask someone to tape programmes for you.

I would like to point out that you still need a TV licence weather using a TV to watch it or not.. don't get caught out the fine is far more than you'd save.

no you don't - I have several friends who have detuned their tvs and use it only to watch DVDs and have informed the TV licence people accordingly and it's all above board.

was to me too but they checked it all out and it's above board - it may be that if you have a video that it's different as that's a receiver but with a DVD you don't but I don't know what the nuances are only that it's above board.

Had a quick look on the website

    Do I need a licence?
    -
You need a TV Licence to use any television receiving equipment such as a TV set, set-top boxes, video or DVD recorders, computers or mobile phones to watch or record TV programmes as they are being shown on TV.

Sorry, your friends are right as long as they don't watch telly you don't need a licence to watch your DVDs ect BUT if you do receive the telly you do need a licence.

Just out of interest, how do you detune the TV to satisfy the TV licensing people that you're not using it? Presumably you have to do something permanent to it, otherwise you could just retune it when you want? Sorry if it's a silly question - we're considering not renewing our TV license this year but would like to be able to use the DVD player built into our TV as the screen is much bigger than a computer screen.

Also, is there anyway of disabling the "receiving" element of your video player, so you just use it to watch videos, not to record them?
