Bankruptcy & Tax Returns

I need a bit of advice from someone and was hoping someone on here might have some knowledge of these things
I received a form this morning (no cover letter, just a form) for a Tax Return for the years 2009 & 2010. I was declared bankrupt in the July of 2009 and have been paying PAYE since the August of 2009.
When we went bankrupt we asked the insolvency service about this and they said we did not need to file any returns as we were bankrupt.
I have just got off the phone to the Inland Revenue about it and I am still none the wiser as to whether I need to complete them or not. The very rude woman on the other end of the phone didn't seem to be able to comprehend the fact that I don't have any of my books from that time as we had to surrender them to the Official Receiver's. She was more worried that I hadn't used the 0845 number and had called on a number for people overseas.
So does anyone here have any experience or knowledge of these things.
If it turns out that I do have to file the Tax Return I still have the problem of not knowing any of the figures.
Thanks

Darn it, I'm sure there was a similar question recently, the answers to which would have helped you. Just don't seem to be able to find it, sorry about that.
Hopefully someone who knows will pop along shortly to advise. I think the recommendation was to ring the OR and/or pass the tax return on to them to complete, but not 100% sure. When I joined, I needed a name. The forum members gave one to me...I am INAN

I had the same thing as i was self-employed when i went BR and received a Tax-Return that covered the period of my BR (2008/2009) i simply registered online and completed it with NIL figures. I can't remember exactly as it was a couple of years ago now but to the best of my knowledge, once you enter NIL (or 0.00) onto the form under 'Income for the period' (or whatever the correct wording is) the online form all but shuts down and allows you to skip to the digital signature bit*. My accountant used to complete my return but as she was one of my creditors (how ironic) i didn't think she'd be much use so i sat down with a brew to do it myself, i know i was finished long before my brew!
Best bet is to call again, using the correct number (pfft!) and speak to someone else, failing that, make an appointment with the CAB as they'll have the resources to either answer your question, or they'll know someone who can. The CAB did a lot of running around for me when i needed them and really helped with some questions i was stuck with.
*I too was told that no tax was due so ignored the original tax-return when it came, i only responded when i was slapped with a £100 fine for not submitting it on time. I registered online, filled it in as desrcribed and the fine was immediately waived. I never heard another peep from HMRC after that, which was nice.0 -
Many thanks for this. I wAs going to post exactly the same question.0
