Faulty Handle on PVC window?

Faulty PVC window handle.
The handle on our bedroom window was not undoing the latch to open the window.
I took out the screws and removed the handle to see that the turner was "rung" and not turning in the "square". I then used a large flat head screwdriver, which did turn the "square" however the window latch still did not open. Now we are left with a window in the closed position.
How do we get the window open to remove and replace the locking mechanism and handle?
Thanks.
