Declaring SORN (vehicle off road) when can i re-tax?

Hello

Having made a mess-up of the car tax, it runs out at midnight  , and am waiting for insurance paperwork (a certificate of insurance or cover note) which was meant to arrive today but didn't, so do i now have to declare the car "off road" and put it off the public road (it's usually parked on the street), or do i wait until the post has been in the morning, when hopefully the paperwork will come through, otherwise do i declare it off-road then, having taken it off the road already?

I managed to make a simple situation appear more complicated than it reads!

Apparantly the clampers were out this morning at about 9:30, so they must have it on record that it is ending. I could pay for it online but then would have to wait for the tax disc to arrive, and they claim a 5 working day notice.

Also, the point i was originally trying to make was, if i declare the car "off-road" and then get paperwork through te next day, can i re-tax at the post office, or do i have to wait for SORN documents to come through the post?

Thanks for any advice.

If you declare a vehicle as SORN you can re tax it at anytime as long as you have the usual MOT anf relevant insurance documents.

As regards the other question.........that is up to you to decide.
  • my inclination was wait until the morning (post usually comes early) and if the documents haven't come then declare it as SORN.

i was just worried about having to further wait for any period of time after declaring SORN, other than that of waiting for insurance documents, i have the valid MOT paid for insurance etc, just need the certificate/cover note, for the tax disc.

Though i am thinking now that i may as well declare SORN now, and even if the documents come in the morning, then i can still re-tax at the post office?

I could pay for it online ..........

Probably not ... if it's Insce you are waiting for. As the DVLA online system checks for current detail logged on a national Insurers database, before it will complete the transaction. And, in my experience some Insurers are a bit slow to update the detail
