How do employers view the odd day off sick?

I'm sorry if this isn't the right place for this post, but I know you DFW lot much better than other boards, so hope it is ok to post this here.

I've had the odd day off sick here and there and never particularly worried about it. There are a couple of people in my office who have got appalling sick records, so I suppose I feel ok about mine.

Next week I will be applying for a new post within my team (will be a promotion in a sense) and I really want it, but know that there will be competition internal and external.

The thing is I feel like crap and have been run down for the last week or so and can't envisage going in tomorrow. I may feel better in the morning, but at the moment I just want to curl up into a little ball and afterall, there has been moans that some of my sickly colleagues have been coming in and spreading germs, so in a way I'd be saving the office!

I'm probably sounding paranoid, but do you think it will stack against me? My boss will of course be on the interview panel for this new job and I don't want her thinking I'm unreliable?

I don't think you'll have many problems if the others have taken more days off than you ;) although when it comes down to the nitty gritty and if 2 of you come equal in a choice, they will start looking at how much time you have had off, this can then be used in their final desicion  this is how DH lost his job last year, they pointed all employees, the 3 that scored lowest, were then scored on other things, like how long employed and how many days off,DH had taken 2 more days off than the others (due to house fire,so think justified) but because the computer doesn't have any feelings,it chose him for redundancy
Good luck with the promomtion,if you are worried, show willing and go in,moan a lot and they may send you home :D

  • I suppose it's something like 5 maybe 6 days - between now and this time last year, which isn't that bad is it? Well, definately not bad compared to some of my colleagues, but then there are colleagues who are never off sick!

My boss has been in post (new to company) since last September and since then I've had 2 days off sick.
  • That doesn't sound too bad to me. My company starts to fret if you have more than 8 in a year.

    thats nothing to worry about!!

Past 12 months i have had 10 days off sick recovering from an operation.

Year before that i have 42 days off sick - (had a bad car accident)

My supervisor has just had a month off sick, my supervisor before her had 3 months off sick.

I am sure if you can prove how good you will in your potential new position i dont think your sick record will come into it. Everyone gets ill!!!!

I have to say if it was me i'd make the effort and go in. Although it's not exactly the same thing, when there redundancies made in my company last year sick days were definitely taken into account. So makes me think they would be for promotions etc too. Plus irrelevant of what has gone before taking time off may be quite fresh in people's minds when making decisions next week....They dont call it survival of the fittest for nothing ;)
  • Thanks, I'm just so keen to get this job, I'm starting to think about things I wouldn't normally worry about (which isn't going to make me feel any better!). I always feel guilty about being off sick - even though they are genuine - but thanks guys, wont fret now.

Employers without question look at things like sickness records when internally recruiting. If you're not contageous, you should go.

Different companies have different rules for when "management" get involved with sick records. British Airways is 10days from memory, so if you have your 10th day, expect an interview with a manager on your return, they also do the same thing for more than 1 absence in 3 months, and there may be another criteria (its all been in the papers recently). Other companies operate similar schemes, so just be careful.

If it was a promotion I REALLY wanted I'd go in,especially as it's next week you're being scrutinised.Even if you go in sick as anything then get sent home or go home half day at least you made the effort. That'd be remembered in a far more positive way than a simple no show....
