Harlands and CRS

Hi,
I received a letter today from CRS advising that I owed £257.24 (£189.15 for Lifestyle Fitness and £68.09 'Standard Fee').
A little background on the issue: My friend and I signed up for the gym under the impression that it was a joint account (they give discount when two people signed up). We had previously been members of the gym (I will explain why this matters later) and the money was taken from my friend's account with no hassle. So my friend decided to switch bank accounts and this was when the trouble started. The switch didn't go smoothly and I started to receive failed payment letters to which I contacted Harlands and enquired to the reasoning behind this.
They charged us each £25 for failed DD payments, we were still under the illusion this was one account. In the end as it was an issue with my friend's bank we had no alternative than to clear the debt and sort out the arrears. When I contacted Harlands they advised that my friend would need to contact them as it was his bank account. My friend then got in touch and made a payment and setup a payment plan to which we considered the issue resolved. This was in the middle of October and I received no correspondence after my previous contact by phone that this was about to be passed to the debt collectors.
I contacted Harlands who advised that my friend and I had two separate accounts and that when my friend called he setup a payment plan with his account. I understand that I might not have a leg to stand on due to the separate accounts however if I can prove that we were sold the membership as a joint do I have a case?
Also, when we took out the membership as we were members before, the minimum 12 month contract did not apply. This was confirmed by Lifestyle Fitness. The reason I have mentioned this is because they £189.15 they are charging includes up to the end of the 12 month term.
I have read through some threads already, would it be advisable to send them a letter asking for proof of the debt?
I look forward to your advice.
Regards
Davey
