Are more people applying to college/uni

Just wondered if more people are choosing to apply to college or uni, due to the lack of jobs around at the minute?

  • I don't know whether there are any figures available for colleges but university applications appear to be down by 13% this year.

Indeed, the figure i caught last week showed a 14% reduction in uni applications.
    Don’t be a can’t, be a can.
  • The £27000 fee millstone plus living cost's puts people off going to uni.

It will be interesting to see if this 13% reduction in applicants is across the board, or whether some subjects have bigger drops than others - some degrees are undoubtably well worth the £27k - I suspect many will go for a degree that will give them a reasonable chance in the jobs market over something more "recreational".
  • A rise in HE level courses in FE (NVQ4 and above) compared to last year.
A drop in employer responsive, work based learning numbers but a rise or no change in most learner responsive courses.
Basically, apprentices & NVQs in the workplace are down (as are employer numbers) and full/part time taught courses are the same or up on last year. EMA replacement has not brought the figures down interestingly.

You have to take those figures in context, there is a drop simply because there was an unprecedented rush last year to beat the fees increase, so this year is a return to more normal application levels.
  • There are also many more courses available in FE Colleges at HE level. Higher Level Apprenticeships (Health & Social Care, Engineering mainly) and new courses at level four (degree level) being written & accredited.
  • Yes There is a rise in number of colleges and universities which obviously resulted in more number of students to join in it.
  • Uni applications down 15%
