Don't you agree? People spend most of their time on facebook these days or youtube watching videos. Some even go so far as to do some searches in Google and try learn something new. That's where I began learning new things and realising the how powerful a tool the internet can be these days. You've seen it everywhere, Youtube videos are being watched and talked about more than anything on TV and people are becoming famous simply by creating a following through Youtube or Myspace or something similar.

You can build a website in around 10 mins with simple, free hosting services and from the minute your site is live you have the potential to be earning money from it. Adsense can be integrated into the site to generate revenue, affiliate links incorporated into the content, again creating an opportunity for a bit extra cash. But the main things a website is good for is promoting a service. People can be more useful than they give themselves credit for, things you do in your day to day life can be structured into creating a service that you can charge money from and promote through your website.

Once the website is up and running you will need to generate some interest for your service, if it's a service you can run online, great. If not you can still get yourself noticed by spreading the word on any number of social media sites, blogs, forums etc. Create genuine content around your service to promote it and act as online ambassadors for your service. Anyone can do it, the hard part is actually believing you can and then making the effort.

  • I agree to an extent, particularly with the last sentence - most people keep putting it off, whereas if you dive in and try, at least you'll get something out of it.

A website can be built in 10 mins, that much is true, however building a website is the easy part, it's getting people to visit it that is the problem. There are millions upon millions of websites, and every market is becoming more flooded by the day with more sites being created. You make it sound like anyone can throw a website together and then sit back and watch the money roll in, which couldn't be further from the truth. The same goes for your statement about Youtube - yes, anyone can become famous from it, but how many people try, and how many succeed? The video has to become viral before you could become famous from it.

If you have a service to promote, then yes a website will help, but you still have the problem of finding a way for potential customers to visit it, which again is not easy, particularly if there are a lot of others offering the service.

I agree with you OP, I would also add that don't think too much about what your doing just get on with it, over planning and over thinking can give you a false sense of achievement and then your still sitting there in a month having achieved...nothing.
Thank you for this site Martin

  • I fully understand that driving traffic and converting them into real sales is the biggest challenge when trying to start a business. I try to get people I know to start simple and then see where they end up. Microsoft and Apple were not created overnight, the first PC and Mac are entirely different to how they began and are entirely different companies to when they first started.

These days there are plenty of social media sites to start the conversation on your business, free of charge. You can instantly connect with hundreds of people and share your website. If you want to make any money from the internet you need to start somewhere. I think getting your first website up and running for free, then making people aware of your product or service through social media is the first step. Once you get even 1 sale then you know it is possible to make more, I'm not saying it is for everyone but if you're going to be sitting on Facebook or Youtube watching other people promote themselves you might as well be promoting yourself while you're there. Interacting with your potential customers on a human level is the new way of creating business. Everyone has the tools to get started... and that's all it takes... Getting started.

A lot of people dont know that Youtube is the number 1 viewed channel in the world made by broke teenagers who were in debt and only had a few hundred dollars to start up.

I guess they don't know that because it's not true - it was started by three ex-employees of paypal who got angel investors to give them $3.5 million.

The point is they had nothing and got help proves many people wrong that you have to have substantial capital and investment to start a business.

They were established IT professionals with a track record of success, they weren't simply three joeys who hit up a millionaire for some money. They also put into thousands each themselves.

Making money from the internet is neither easy or difficult. It just takes a lot of effort.

As the saying goes, "it took me five years of hard graft to become an overnight success".

Although that applies to everything in life, unless you were born sucking the silver spoon ;)

I remember years ago talking to the head financial honcho at Morrisons where he explained how well Mr Morrison the younger had done, 'because he only started with 12 stores'
