Options
i have a question does anyone know if there is a set amount a baliff charges if they come out?
my sister has had a baliff at her door just ( she moved in with her boyfriend yesterday) for unpaid council tax, its not in her name but they want the outstanding council tax bill which is just over 400 and then he said it 350 fee for him coming out, only this seems high to me. citizens advice is closed today cause she just phoned them.

any help would be appriciated

  • Check out the advice from hallowitch under this link from a previous thread:

This is just one example but you should be able to find many more by hallowitch explaining the cans and can'ts of bailiff fees and you may get further contributions on this thread.

There are likely to be liability order costs on top of the Council tax ( @ £45) then bailiff costs.
A first visit\letter where no levy is made can only be charged at £24.50.
Additional costs are applied if the bailiff is able to levy against goods ( @ £43) but a first visit fee can't be charged the same day as a levy. After a levy on goods is made, a subsequent visit with a van will carry a high van fee ( @ £160) but that can't be the same day as the levy.
So £350 in fees from a single visit is not possible.

There's an excellent template letter somewhere which puts the bailiff to strict onus for him to break down the debt, and explain how these 'fees' have come about. But yes, it does very much appear as though he's trying it on.

I'd suggest using that letter (not sure where it is on MSE, but Consumer Action Group threads frequently have it displayed in bailiff-related threads).

Perhaps some kind-hearted soul can re-produce that letter here?
