Is £40,000 really a liveable income for families in the UK?

Are there any benefits that are assessed on the value of assets rather than income?
I suspect I could have property and assets worth 100bn but if my income was low I and I had children I would pay reduced tax. Would you put any limits on the assets people have before they can claim any benefits or tax breaks for low income?Caveat_Mortgagor wrote: »By Michaels own admission he has half a million in equity in his house and yet he gets given benefits. !!!!!!?!?!I think....0 -
I'd put a limit on low income with intent.0

Sole or joint?
Agree on your sentiments re the system.
Sole. I am a family of one, I am single/live alone.0 -

Oops almost missed this one, JB.
I'm assuming it's a modern passiv haus? I'd be interested in discussing the design, could you let me know which poster has such an energy saving super insulated home?0 -

I'll be back in a year to let you know how I got on.... in the meantime it sounds like I have a few world cruises to book
Good reply PN . Send me your bank account details and I will set up a standing order, I amin Nigeria so imay take a few days however if you transfer your£8K to me by Western Union first it will help to speed things up.
Lets see how many want to take up the "live on £40K challenge", do not want to try it on my own. The parameters would need to be maximum of £40K net expenditure including mortgage costs.
It might be grounds for divorce here though as Mr Spirit does not know that I am thinking of this.0 -
Well th budgeting spreadsheet says i spend all in less than 32k pa so i'm in. As there are 5 of us that has got to be less per head than you, PN.Good reply PN . I know that NDG and her OH are lawyers and are on great salaries, why would I think they needed to scrimp?
We're self-employed, so not on salaries at all. Barristers usually are SE.
We don't earn a bad living, but in many ways we're fairly cautious with money....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

Economies of scale. Now, if the five of you were to live in five separate households for a total of £32k pa, that would be an achievement.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
