Recruitment consultants

I've just applied for a business development role via a recruitment agency for a role similar to the one I'm currently doing but my present salary is much lower than the one on offer.I had all the experience/attributes the spec asked for. As soon as the consultant found out what my current salary was he said I wouldn't be suitable and stopped asking questions....then he asked if my boss would be interested in the role!! Is this normal and should I of lied and said my salary was much more??

you are on a lower salary? I have been told by loads of people who have done it - to get a higher salary lie about the one you are on if asked. I am scared to do so in case they ask my last employer
  • Depends on the agent, client and how well he is doing with finding suitable candidates.

As you tend to get higher they tend to get better and more willing to discuss stretching your skills, pay etc where as earlier on in your career they tend to be much more focused on volume so want easy placements only.

Ultimately you could lie, or you can avoid the question or give a vague answer.

I'm not saying anyone should lie but I have found it rare for salaries to be disclosed on references. Doesn't mean it'll never happen though. Also you can legitimately make your salary sound higher by discussing it in terms of a package, so if you add up your benefits such as pension, bonus if you get one, private health insurance etc it can come out a bit higher.

It just doesn't stop anyone asking your old employer though and that's the worry plus I have nothing to add to my basic to make it higher. I never really tell agencies what my last salary was - I just what I am looking for and that's the going rate anyway.

Biz dev roles can have a wide range of salaries I have seen recently from 25k to 100k plus package. Next time don't disclose your salary, just let them know what our salary expections are, but leave room for negotiation.

E.g. If your on 32k say you want nearer 45k with a view to accepting 40k

Should be putting this into practice again tomorrow over lunch with a head hunter who called me tonight :D
