Reducing my hours

Hi,
I currently work full time in the public sector [county council] and have been offered a 1 day a week job in the private sector but in a job that I really want to do - and there's a possibility of the one day extending to more in the future.
I've worked for my current employer for 26 years [different jobs but continuous service] [I'm now 41].
In the current climate, I am sure I could reduce my hours in my current job - but what do I need to think about if I take up this new position?
Pension? Should I be paying something extra into a private pension?
The pay will be less, but I really want a new challenge.
Regards
Alun

Things to consider will be pension, depending on what you get via your main role; what flexibility your new employers will want - you may work every Friday but what happens if they say you need to attend the monthly team meeting every last Thursday?; Conflict of interest - depends on what you are doing in both jobs but a possibility; Contract of employment with either role may prohibit you having a second job though more likely on your full time job;0
