Time limits on tax underpayment demands?

I’ve only just been made aware I owe £559 for the tax year 2006/07.

I’ve heard that I may be able to appeal this demand on the grounds of it being over 4 years ago.

Can anyone tell me if this is true and possibly direct me to some formal confirmation online? I’ve been through the HMRC site and I’m just getting frustrated with getting nowhere. :(

Many Thanks

There's nothing in legislation to stop HMRC going back to 06-07. But I had understood they were drawing a voluntary line at 07-08 ....... unless there were exceptional circumstances.

    Does this help

    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/briefs/brief1610.htm

Time limit for underpayments to be notified appears to be four years after the end of the tax year so time limit for 06/07 would be 5/4/11 if I'm reading it correctly.

Would appear that HMRC gave allowed a period of grace to 1/4/12 where tax is overpaid in non self assessment cases

Search under MSE News on this website for " Thousands more could get tax written off using HMRC loophole"
    (Won't let me link it...)

Get the impression from your post that you would be able to get them to cancel/write off the underpayment under their own ESC A19 rule.

    Good luck!

There's not a shred of evidence to suggest that? Where does the post imply that HMRC had information they didn't act upon (the essence of ESC A19)? Whilst it may be an old year - you need more data than just that.

I was working on the basis, as most people should that HMRC got it wrong as tends to be the case.
If so then it would be worth looking into, hence my post...

They have got it wrong. Read post #3.

But ESC A19 doesn't get close.
