I want to buy my best friend a portable dvd player for his 40th, I like the Toshiba models, which dont seem as expensive as the Panasonic (which seem to be the best). Anyone got any advice? In terms of spec, I think 7" screen is minimum, and Divx playback. Price no more than £150. Assistance appreciated, regards Tim

I can't be much help on the technical side but I can give you a tip based on the one we have. When ours closes the screen is on the outside. This is great for viewing but not for transporting as we're worried the screen is going to get damaged. Just something to consider...0

Bought three Philips 7" portable DVD player in local Tesco Extra last night. Wife uses them at work. £85 each, reduced from some higher price. Can't see them on the web. We have an older Philips model at home and its pretty good.
You could phone and check your local Extra and see if they have them and the model number. Do a store lookup on the web.
Come with car power adapter and remote. If its like our older one the battery if good for a couple of movies. They have two earphone sockets.
EDIT:
Ignore me! I didn't read the important bit about Divx. You can buy converters to transcode from DIvx to Video formats (VOB etc). Or buy one of those Grundig VP6200 £99 "best gadgets" they play Divx native and have a video out.

There's a thread in the grabbit about a Grundig hard disk player which seems good value.0

trippy, thank you that is a very good point, and leads me away from the Grundig that Bargainhunter suggested, although the device itself looks a bargain, and if my friend did not need to use it on the train, I would go for that. Skr00ge, thanks for the info.... still hunting....0

Consider how long a battery life you want / need.
I wanted mine for travelling about on trains and coaches so got one with a 4 hour battery life. (A Toshiba)
If its going to be plugged in all the time, then this is less of an issue...0 -

Don't know what postage cost will be as it's based on postcode, but might be worth a look0 -
