Overpayment Tax Help!

Hi Everyone,

I received what I believe is my P800 document last week. Within this document are three reports relating to years -

2004/5 2005/6 2007/8

On each of these years it appears that I have overpaid the following

2004/5 £950
2005/6 £550
2007/8 £1050

Today I revived a cheque for £950 but I was under the impression the cheque should cover payments for all years?

Am i misreading the document or should I be due additional cheques?

I found the form very confusing. But i am still a little confused about receiving one cheque for just one of those years?

Just to note, I am referring to an overpayment not under

If the P800s were received in the same envelope - then normally the years are aggregated and you get a composite cheque for the net amount. If in separate envelopes - presumably you may get separate cheques - as your figures imply.

Usually - the 04/05 under / overpayment is carried into 05/06. And the net from that into 07/08 ....... and then a cheque / demand for the aggregate result. But if you've read the individual P800s correctly - then yours have been processed discretely and other cheque(s) should be en route.

  • They were all in the same envelope. So I believe that the cheque I have received is the total amount.

Then you need to carefully check the carry forward figure between each of the P800s. And contact HMRC if you're convinced your posted figures are right?

Except I'd be tempted to give it a few days. As a singular cheque in such cases is both my experience and that of many other posters on here - but it may not be always the case for these earlier years and where there isn't continuity of years.

(That last bit made me look at the HMRC website where this endorses the single cheque - but suggests we're both wrong on how many P800s fit in an envelope these days! )
