Claiming back Income Tax

Hi,

Not sure if this is the right place or not, but I was wondering how I can go about seeing if I can claim back some tax? I was on maternity leave for a year, 6 months paid, 6 months unpaid, I resigned from work last August. During 2006, I received a bonus from work, of which I was taxed £99.67. As I didn't earn in 2006 other than this bonus, am I entitled to claim this back? I really don't understand tax so any help would be much appreciated - thank you

  • Hi tigzem,

Contact your tax office by phone or post (details should be on your payslip) and they should repay you the tax back as long as you don't expect to work between now and April.

  • Try https://www.hmrc.gov.uk they should list contact details - your tax office is distinguishable by the first three digits of your PAYE refence.. for example, say, my PAYE Ref is 951/LP35100 the 951 relates to Manchester Regent tax office

As a side issue, tigzem, was there a pay rise during your leave? This case might interest you.

Yes there was and I did get notification of it, but sadly by the time this payrise was given I was on unpaid mat leave, made interesting reading - thank you
