I do prefer do it by myself with my family.
it is the happiness during you do the things with the ones you loved but not just see the beautiful Xmas tree.
  • Are you asking as an owner or as a visitor?
If an owner then some people actually go away at Christmas to get away from it.
If you can judge from any conversations you have with the visitor during booking etc, then you can judge whether decs will be welcome or the last thing on earth they want :D

We used to offer mince pies & a glass of sherry (or non-alcoholic alternative) on arrival which went down well with just about everyone regardless of their Christmas views.

I just hope you don't have the same people we had in one of our cottages for one Christmas/New Year. They left sweet wrappers all over the floors, mouldy spuds & fat in the oven & almost every wooden surface sprayed with gold Christmas paint. It took 2 people 3 days to clean it.
Believe it or not they twice asked to come back again & seemed totally surprised that there could be any reason we should decline their request
Having said that most people are nice but there's plenty out there for who the question "Do they live like this at home?" is the first thing that springs to mind.
  • my sister owns the let and they have a couple booked in, we each think differant so i thought i would ask the question.

  • I guess you'd have to email them and ask. They might be Jewish or some other religion and possibly not even celebrate Christmas!

a boxed up tree and baubles in a spare room? Happy medium?
    Married the lovely Mr P 28th April 2012. Little P born 29th Jan 2014
  • Once I went away at Xmas and there was a small tree in the living room which was plugged in to a timer so the lights came on in the evening and went off about midnight. I thought that was really thoughtful because we didn't even need to worry about turning off the lights!

I think a small tree is nice to make it feel homey but no other decorations, some people find them tacky and can't stand them.
  • I am going away this Christmas to a cottage and don't expect it to be decorated so we have bought a pop up Christmas tree and some decorations to take with us.

My mum has cottages to let and she does this - just a small decorated tree and nothing else. Then when they arrive she asks if they want it leaving or removing and it's easy to just pick up the tree and take it away :D She's never had anyone ask to take it away yet they all say it's a lovely touch :p

This made me :rotfl: :rotfl: as I quite often get calls from my Mum and that's what she says too :rotfl:

I was looking at going away at Christmas (ha, as if I could afford it!) as someone else said to get away from Christmas. My father died a few days before Christmas so it's a hard time, but I would personally ask the owner not to put anything up. I would agree with emailing them to ask.
