  • By offering the job at the salary they have, they have established, as far as they are able, that a permanent employee would be on those terms. After the Christmas break, when you would have been there as a temp for more than 12 weeks after 1 October, they can point to that figure as the comparable salary. Then it would just be a case of dealing with any extra holiday entitlement but perhaps the company offers only the statutory minimum which you are already entitled to.
  • The ball is in your court as they say. Companies may be trying to cut back but most are getting rid of people who have been over paid for to long. Good staff are hard to find and not 10 a penny. I agree with the HR dron comment as a lot of these are over paid. You decide if you want to be in a job untill you find better. My view is its their lose not yours. But you have to make the decision. Good Luck

Guess the answer is that you will have to accept this underpaid job offer and keep your eyes open for a better job at some point if you can.

The one plus point is that at least you know what this firm is like at the outset - so won't be expecting better treatment from them in the future than they are likely to give people..

I would say - dont bother to reply to this email (after all - you have nothing to gain by doing so). Play them at their own game - and, just as they are pretending you got it by accident, then you in turn pretend you havent received it. Dont mention the email - just dont forget they've "shown their true colours" at the outset and bear that in mind in the future.

If you did mention the email to them - they might turn it on its head and try and call it "she did some further negotiation with us - blow her - withdraw the job offer". If you dont mention it - then they will think "Perhaps she really believed she received it accidentally - we've got a bit of a mug here - oh good..." and they are likely to underestimate your ability to "read the situation and act accordingly".

In the current climate - always be glad of an employer that underestimates you....

I' be nice about it but l would let them know l'd seen it by replying to the HR rep with her cheeky bit in bold and the response....

'not sure you were supposed to send this to me ;-) '

Let her feel embarrassed by her stupidity and cheek.

I can understand why they are cutting back, the question is though... you said you'd be entitled to more Christmas Eve because of the agency regulations? Would you be better off by taking the job? Obviously if not they're pulling a fast one.

    Happy moneysaving all.

You have said that the pay for the permanent role is less than the previous post holder was paid, but you have not said how this relates to what you have actually been paid for the last 18 months.

eg. if you have been paid £x per hour, and the permanent job also pays £x per hour then you are not worse off financially (even though the previous person was paid £y per hour) - you just "feel" as though you are (even though you were "happy" to work for £x per hour previously).

Not sure if I have explained well ! ............. basically, were you expecting an increase in pay when made permanent ?
  • Have you actually let on that they 'accidently' copied you in on the email or do they not realise?

Some Directors that I have worked for never looked at who was copied in on an email!

I've had emails before, not quite like this but obviously something I should not have been copied into and I have usually replied with 'think this has been sent to me in error' it's produced a few red faces but not sure that it would really help you to do the same.

How approachable is your LM? Personally that would be something that I would would like to bring up in a 1-2-1 with them if it would be something you could discuss with them.

That is HR all over though, most of them are like that, it's usually a standing joke about how useless HR are in any company. However that person really should not be in HR.

What sort of relationship do you have with your agency? As you are a long term temp with them, how likely are they to find you something else?

If you like the job you are doing and the people you work with then perhaps consider taking it,

I would keep my mouth shut and waiit for them to come back to you asking if you have made your mind up yet and just say still thinking about it.

Are you temp though the agency?

If you are then they have agency fees on top of your pay.
