After buying a set of LED tree lights ( LED being noted for their longer life than normal bulbs ) at HOMEBASE , i was asked by the cashier if i had considered what i would do if they failed after one season on the tree as the bulbs cannot be replaced ?
Oh no they are trying to sell me insurance on a set of tree lights !!! Letting her babble on i said " no thanks if they did fail after 1 season then i will go to Trading Standards as they are unfit for purpose and you can give me my money back !!"
I couldn't believe their cheek
A friend had also had Argos do the same for a hairdryer !! and the insurance cost more than the origional product !!!
Surely we can put a stop to this as it is nothing more than a scam as we have Rights on faulty goods .. How low can these companies stoop

I'm sure you realise Homebase & Argos are the SAME company and have been doing this scam for years.0 -
Don't be ridiculous. It's not a scam. It's not compulsory to buy it so, as geri1965 said, just say no if you don't want it.
Anyway the staff of Homebase and Argos have to ask every customer if they want insurance otherwise they get disciplined by management.0 -
It is a form of brainwashing therefore in my eyes ,a scam, especially as they try to make you believe you have no comeback if they fail ! When you have the " Sale of Goods act "
Not everyone is strong minded either and they could sell insurance that is not really required to someone vulnerable or who cannot in all honesty, afford it , not everyone can say NO ! or even have a clue of their rights as consumers ...0 -

Brainwashing? How exactly?
It's not a scam in the slightest, overpriced maybe.churchmouse wrote: »not everyone can say NO !
Oh come on, if somebody is incapable of saying no, that's hardly Homebases fault.
For some items (certain consoles), the insurance can work out very good value, and much easier to claim on than statutory rights.0
