Recipe Advice Please...

Hi

I'm sorry if I've posted this in the wrong place...

I have an American recipe for Marinara Sauce which calls for 1x 16 ounce can of tomatoes.

This recipe yields 12 servings - but I've looked online and can't find a conversion to the equivalent in our size cans... I'm thinking that perhaps it will be 2 or 3 of our cans looking at the ingredients below it says 6 cloves of garlic... :D Any advice would be gratefully received !

Thanks

Tracey

1 Can tomatoes, peeled in juice (16-ounce) coarsely crushed
1⁄3 Cup olive oil
6 garlic cloves, crushed
3 onions, medium, chopped
4 carrots, finely chopped
2 Tablespoon basil, dried
1 Tablespoon oregano, dried
2 Teaspoon salt
1 Teaspoon pepper

It is about a 500g jar/tin but that doesn't look like enough for the amount of garlic etc. Where is the recipe from? I've never seen carrots in a marinara either.

    Hope it works out ok

its about 3 or 4 cans I believe - try three and see how it goes- if its too thick then add another can or a good squirt of tomato puree and water! if its too thin then adding the tomatoes from another can will help!
a lot depends on how many tomatoes are actually IN the can.
  • 16 ounce is about 400g.

So 1 x normal 400g tin of tomatoes.
  • For 12 portions I personally would use at least 6 tins. So the original recipes doesn't make sense.
    Put the kettle on. ;)
  • 6 cloves of garlic isn't a lot... unless you're mistaking it for 6 bulbs.
  • Thanks for your comments everyone - although I love garlic, I'm not sure that I would put 6 cloves of garlic into any sauce that I make using just one can of tomatoes. Also as mentioned - this recipe is an American recipe meant to yield 12 servings - you cook it for 1½ hrs until the sauce is reduced in half, which again if it's meant to serve 12, one of our normal sized can of tomatoes wouldn't be enough. Here's a link to the website for anyone that's interested...

Tracey - I usually use a 400g can chopped tomatoes (with stock added) for 5-6 people so I would go with 2 if I was cooking for 12. 6 cloves of garlic does sound a lot but I don't like my sauces too garlicky. :)
