Storing my wedding dress

Hi,

I purchased a second-hand wedding dress over the weekend and am now not sure how to store it for a year.

It has a cathedral length train so it is too long to be hung without the train sitting in a pile at the bottom, alternatively it could go in a box. Has anyone got any ideas?

At the moment it's in a plastic wrapper from the dress shop and in a cardboard box folded in four... Probably not ideal!

Any advice appreciated!

You can get proper wedding dress boxes (box is acid free) from ebay with PH neutral tissue paper -so as to protect your dress. I would go for this if I had to store it for a long time. HTH

I covered mine with a plain white, cotton single duvet cover so that the train could hang loose and it was just covered, but you still need the height to hang it. Definitely take it out of the plastic though, so it can breathe/air flow around it. Can you hang it at someone elses house? In the loft? From a bookcase?

    Good luck. x

Personally, I wouldn't hang it in the loft. Good idea re. duvet cover for train.

Thanks for the replys so far...

Does everyone think it'll be ok to hang for a year? Is there a possiblity that it could get out of shape?
  • I got my dress in February from a sample sale and my wedding isnt until next July and it has been hanging in mil2bs spare room ever since in a large double duvet. It does have a long train but we just make sure its not all caught up. It hasnt effected the shape or anything at all.

If your train is really long could you buy two single duvet covers (or doubles - however big you need), sew them together at their openings, cut a hole in the tops - one for the coat hanger, and one at the new bottom to get the dress in? Then all you need to find is somewhere tall that you could hang it. Not very practical but how about hanging it in a stair well?

Definitely a duvet cover, make sure its white or cream as the colours can stain the dress. My dad put a sturdy hook in the wall of my spare bedroom almost touching the ceiling and my chapel length train does not touch the floor. Dress currently hanging from it until it goes off to be cleaned!

Prior to my wedding it was mostly at my mums laid flat on a double bed in her spare room with the duvet cover laid over it, she popped it in the wardrobe when visitors came to stay.

If you cant store it lying down or hanging up then an acid free box is the next best thing. The thing to do is make sure you shake the dress out regularly to prevent permanent creases especially if the train is too long to hang straight down.

PS - dont hang it on door, the dress can easily get trapped as it opens, I was warned off this by my dress alterations lady who had repaired a dress after a door accident...
  • I purchased my dress in August (one off sale item) and i have it hung up. My shop assisitant sold me a breathable white storage hanger for it. It was £20 mind but i am using a duvet cover for my BM dress as its not as dense as mine!

I moved the wardrobes away from the side of the wall slightly and i have tucked the dress in so it is hanging from the side edge of the wardrobe and protected by the wall so it doesn't get knocked or caught on anything and it stops me being tempted to keep peeping!!!
