Two years ago I sent dh's tax return in a little late. We got a letter saying we'd got the £100 fine and we paid it, but the following year it was refunded. No idea why though.

Well, I didn't put it down as such. :D I have no idea why we got it back. Just saying that you might get lucky next year.
I always end up sending it in at the last minute. Every year I vow to have it in on plenty of time.

I think if your tax liability is less than £100 they don't charge the fine, so if you paid it they would refund you.

I don't know for sure, but maybe the warning is so that people don't print one off and then send it in, having already filed one on-line and then completely clogging up the system.
When did you post it, It may be worth phoning HMRC to see if the return has been logged into the system.

Or, they can at least note your record as to what has happened in case it gets picked up.

It will probably be accepted, as long as it is complete and you have signed it.

As whatatwit said, the warning is probably to stop people sending in two returns, one on the interent and one on paper.

In which case it will be logged as received (so no penalty) and then sent back to you as unsatisfactory at some point, and you will have a set amount of time to sign it and send it back.
  • You can't be charged a penalty higher than any tax due. So if you are due a refund for the year the Rev can't charge you a penalty at all. If your tax bill is between £1 and £99 then the penalty will match that amount.

One way around it though - make sure you pay any tax due by 31/01, even if you haven't submitted your Tax Return and the Revenue cannot charge you a penalty at all!

I would also say that there is simply no way the Rev are going to accept what you have sent in as a Tax Return.
The 'Toni' is as in Collette not Swiss :p
