What do you mean by personalising the ceremony? Just curious as I have been to several civil weddings and they all seemed the same format.

i mean adding aspects which the couple feel makes the ceremony their own. we got married recently and had choice of 5 ceremonies- we picked one that represented the commitment we were making to each other,we had live acoustic music in place of hymns,we had a reading of r choice from a guest and i got to walk up a proper aisle to be given away without having to involve religion. The non religous aspect for us was important. we looked into city hall but its so restrictive-you can walk up an aisle but they dont ask who gives this bride/u can only have recorded music/no or little choice in ceremony format and generally just standard. I actually love belfast city hall and always wanted to marry there but was put off afyer looking into it. I felt newtownards had the best variety if u want a choice

  • A friend in a similar situation is getting married in the Folk and Transport Museum next year - in one of the churches in the village area and both families are more than happy with this arrangement

Or what about a National Trust property?

As someone who chose to send her children to integrated education we were often asked if we were a 'mixed marriage' my standard reply was yes, he is male, I am female, that is the way I prefer it!!!

I'm posting for a work colleague whose son it is getting married. Plenty of great ideas, thanks all for posting and I'll show her the post. Again, many thanks.
