First time buyers credit question...

Nothing too fancy here so hopefully someone can help...
Me and DP thinking of applying for a mortgage as first time buyers at some point soon. I am working near enough full-time, he is in his final year of uni and working part-time so we're waiting until he graduates and is working full-time.
I've been reading up about what's involved in mortgages and the thing I'm concerned about is the credit check. Now, my credit is fairly good, I've missed a handful of DD payments over the last few years, and live in my overdraft, sometimes getting charged, but nothing more. I bailed out DP however when we moved in as he had a load of credit he couldn't afford to pay back. So I took out a loan to pay it all off which I have around five years left on. He has a massive student overdraft and doesn't have anything coming out of his account regularly.
Now, is it a straightforward credit check that would be done? And if so what can we start doing now to improve our (or DP's mainly) status? We've been renting for years and want to get on the property ladder asap, he's got an inheritance coming which we plan to use part of as a deposit, which would work out at just over 5% of the price range we've been looking at.
Any general pointers would be great!
Thanks :T
