Time running out

I´m in a bit of a mess.

Note first that I am not in the UK, I think it will help to explain that ...

Without going into too much details, I have had a bad year financially and personally. I´m self-employed, the personal problems and economy have affected my work. So I have got into a relatively small amount of debt. With a bit of time, I think I can sort this. However, I don´t have much time.

Basically, I got behind on the rent and am being threatened with eviction. I currently owe one month, and if I don´t clear it by the end of the month then it looks as though I will be out, with nowhere to go and my beloved pets that I can´t abandon.

I really don´t know what to do, I´ve tried everything I can to raise the money. I´ve found a flatmate, so that will reduce my outgoings. However, I just can´t think how I´m going to get hold of the money I need in the next few days. Borrowing from family or getting an overdraft is not possible.

My future is on the line and I can´t think straight ...

Sorry if this is a bit vague but I´ve browsed this board and it seems like a friendly, non-judgemental place ...

  • Would taking a deposit from this flat-mate go anywhere to getting the rent up to date? Have they paid you a month's rent in advance?

    Thanks for the comments.

I´ve tried liquidating assets .... no luck.

My flatmate is a prompt payer, but I would need two months from them to clear this month´s arrears, plus next month´s payment, and I really don´t want to tell them of my problems unless I have to. I feel awful that they are at risk.
  • Where exactly are you with regards to rent arrrears etc? The landlord needs to either give you the correct notice (which doesn't necessarily mean you have to leave straight away anyway) or go to court (I think that when the court hearing takes place you have to be 2 months or more in arrears) you can even then I think still appeal to have extra time to find somewhere else etc.
Have you tried phoning Shelter for advice?
Have you applied for all benefits you are entitled to?
Can you apply for a crisis loan from the benefits place?
Are you paying off other unsecured debts such as credit cards/unsecured loans etc? If so then you may need to consider making token payments to them in order to prioritise rent.

DF, I´m not in the UK so the law is different. I have no cc debts (indeed, no cc). Thanks for your good wishes :)

    Hi Magia

Do you know the laws on tenancy agreements in the country you are in? are you sure you can be evicted that quickly?
Aside from the arrears of 1 month, can you afford to pay this months rent?
Could you contact your landlord and see if they will let you pay off the arrears over say the next 3months. as well as keeping up with current rent payments? It will probably be a lot easier for him to accept this option than for him to evict you and have to find another tenant.
