Confused about Credit File

i have just checked my credit file with experian and equifax and all looked fine until i noticed something really strange and wondered if anyone can shed some light on this
i took a loan out with Lloyds back in 1996 which defaulted and due to illness, unemployment etc over the years never actually been paid off
i have been paying a debt collection agency a minimal again on and off due to illness and unemployment
anyhow i decided to check everything out after some very dubious posts about the Collection company
i havent check my File for a long time cos i knew this debt would be on there but it doesnt seem to show up on my file anywhere - why would this be when the money is still owed and is in default
i have asked the Collection company for a copy of the original agreement and 2 months later they still havent given it to me saying they dont have it but are requesting it from the company that apparently bought the loan off lloyds
i have had serious depression on and off over the years and alot of the paperwork i have got from this company was thrown away and i was trying to hide away from it. but i am now trying to deal with this and get my life back in order
i have no idea if there was a 6 year period where nothing was paid so dont know if this is statue barred etc
surely if the money is still owed it will show up on credit file so why isnt it
i am so confused about this
thanks in advance

The entry is removed six years after the default date so it has probably been gone from your credit report for many years.0 -
That's right. Defaults drop off your credit report after six years regardless of outstanding balances.

ok i understand that but surely it would still say i owed this money so why doesnt it0 -
Because ALL records of an account are removed from your report 6 years after any default.
That happens even if money is still owed.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB
