Hi there i am new to the forum as a member but often found it useful when not a member.

Just wandering if someone could help me out here.
I am a single male 27 live at home with parents as dad is disabled so i help mum look after him and help mum out as well.
i was self employed but was forced to close last month and the tax man is demanding i pay them back nearly £5000 in working tax credits.
i am registered with the job centre and currently get £67.50 a week ( £270 a month ) I applied for a job i seen local to me infact only a 4 min walk. and i got the job.
the job is permanent and is 15 hours a week at £6.08 an hour. so a weeks wage over 6 days comes to £91.20 / £364.80 a month so as you can see i am better off in the job by £94.80.
I am wandering if i will be allowed to sign off or because it is only 15 hours a week will they still demand i attend signing on , i sign on on a Wednesday at 2:20pm but i would be working on a Wednesday as my hours are 2pm - 4pm mon-tues-wed-fri-sat and on Sunday i work 5am - 8am and then go back 2m - 4pm.

I was informed by the tax office that once i got a job of 16 hours or more a week they want to be informed so we can set up an agreement to start paying back the money to them, i do have other debts to pay as well but i would like to start making payments to the tax office so i can get them off my back .

Sorry if i have not done a good job in making my situation clear. but hopefully someone will be able to help in some way.

i forgot to say when i travel to the job centre it is by bus which costs £8.90 day return

You would not be earning enough to pay NI contributions and therefore you should continue to register as unemployed and sign on (so long as you are looking for work in addition to what you already have) so that you continue to receive NI credits which count towards your eventual state pension.

Advise the jobcentre of your working hours and they would then be able to change your signing time.

If the tax people are telling you to wait until you work for 16 or more hours a week before contacting them, do just that - wait till you are working more hours.

Definitely continue looking for work - including full-time.
  • no one else ?.

Thinking about it all day and it's starting to look like the job could be more hassle than it is worth to be completely honest , if i am still expected to attend signing on , i would not be able to due to being paid monthly i would not have any money to pay for bus fair fortnightly .
it is not like it is of any use on my CV as i have voluntary work on the CV , i have previous employment on the CV from short term "" project jobs "" that were funded by the lottery etc. Working as car park attendant at a music festival for 3 years running including being put in charge of night shift one year.
and previous employment from working at a local art shop.

as i have said to anamenottaken in a pm 1 member at the tax office stated i would not be expected to make payments on the working tax credits until i had a job of 16 hours minimum per week. But i got 2 letters from HMRC stating that i have to pay both amounts by December 25th 2011 , when i called HMRC up about it i was told the usual that it was down to there system automatically sending the bills out.
in future ive to bin them and when i get a job i must contact them to come to an arranged agreement to make a minimum payment per month and they wont take more than i can afford.
So i am unclear where i stand as 1 says i dont pay anything until i get 16 hours paid work minimum but the other says i must make contact as soon as i get A job.
