Halifax Mortgage Not on Experian Credit Report

I have tried to get a credit card in the last week and was a bit surprised to see that I was turned down for "insufficient credit history". I have two overdrafts, a moblie phone, a settled personal loan, a catalogue account, and a two year old mortgage.

I ran my Experian credit report, and the mortgage is not showing on it. I called Halifax mortgages to see why, and unfortunately, they weren't much help. They confirmed my information was correct, and said that it was Experian's responsibility to get in touch with them - which I'm pretty sure is incorrect??

Who can I get in touch with at Halifax to get this taken care of?

Thanks!

Some lenders don't allow their credit accounts to be shown on the CRA records unless they are becoming a problem. So you can't ask Halifax to show your mortgage account on Experian if they choose not to do so.

Which lender have you applied to for a card? Which CRA does the card lender use?

Have you contacted the overdraft, mobile, loan and catalogue providers, or have you picked out your mortgage lender in particular for a reason?

    Thanks for the reply. ;)

I applied for a card with Halifax, (since my bank accounts, mortgage and ODs are wih them) and Bank of America via Amazon. Halifax does use Experian, and I think BoA does as well.

I didn't get in touch with those other lines of credit as they are all showing on my report.

Could there also be an issue with the fact that on the application I'm putting that I'm a homeowner, but the report isn't showing that I am?

I'm not sure any other reason I would be turned down (other than the history issue they states), since I don't have a lot of unsecured outstanding debt and I've never been late on any payments. My credit lines are active (as in used and paid in full each month).

If you are a mortgage and current account holder with Halifax I'd view that as a good indication they are happy to go as far as they have with you and no further. I'm not an expert on credit cards, so this is simply an informed opinion on the matter.

There is no way of the card issuer checking you are a homeowner, other than by reference to the Land Registry and AFAIK this isn't undertaken by any provider. The lack of appearance of your mortgage on Experian would not cause the card issuer to assume you are lying about your status as a homeowner. Simply stating you are a homeowner should be enough.

As a matter of interest, who told you the "insufficient credit history" was the reason for the decline? Two overdrafts? What's that about?

Isn't BoA the MBNA backer currently out of the UK market for new cards?

Happy to explore the missing mortgage account for you. Fairly confident it should be on there. Drop us a line if you can via the email address on my MSE biog and we'll have a look at this for you.

On your card refusal, Haluifax would factor in their own data as well as your credit report, so they'd certainly be aware you had a mortgage. Some homeowners own their homes outright and don't have mortgages, so I doubt that was an issue specifically. I suggest you write to Halifax head office and request a more detailed explanation.
