THE Olympic effect has seen Weymouth and Portland house prices surge in the last year.

Next summer’s home Games may still be eight months away but local estate agents say the borough housing market is already benefiting from the sailing events on home waters.

Latest figures from the Land Registry of England and Wales show that the average property price in Weymouth and Portland was £209,013 - up 6.1 per cent on last year’s figure.

Most of the rest of the county has also seen a rise in house prices.

ONE resident said he was happy with his house price rising.
Dr Robert Fisher Hall, 74, of Cedar Drive, Southwell, Portland said that he had his property valued and it was slowly going up in value.

He said: “It will definitely tell next year if the Olympics have a bearing on the house price.

“The price has been going up slowly, not the way it used to be a few years ago, but it’s going up and I’m obviously happy about it.”

Yes, I can fully see how a month-long, one-off sporting event taking place a full 150 miles away with just one small sailing event near you could have a massive effect on the price of your house.

What a pile of sh*t. And what a moron.

Eh? Why would house prices rise due to the olympics?

It would suggest people are buying houses simply to watch the games. If they are doing that, they will sell them once they have watched them. (Which just goes to show how utterly stupid the theory is).

Either way, what happens after the olympics? Dr Hall informs us he's mostly not happy?

Eh? Why would house prices rise due to the olympics?

I can get my head around prices rising around the actual games site due to investment, regeneration, transport links, new businesses, publicity etc. Not saying they will, but it's understandable if they did.

The thought of house prices rising in an area of Dorset due to a bit of sailing going on for a couple of weeks is so laughable. You've got to wonder how bored and lacking of actual stories you'd have to be at a newspaper to print this sh*t.

Possibly but not necessarily. Many of the people buying in Dorset will be doing so because of the improved facilities the Olympics will have brought to the area.
I'm guessing that many buyers will be the sailing-type who intend to continue their hobby long after the Olympics have gone.

Meanwhile if BTLers purchase the properties they can let out during the Olympic Sailing events & do very nicely with vastly inflated prices (it happens around every big event) before returning to letting at more normal rates.

What a shame turnbull is stuck in his sister's spare bedroom and cannot take advantage of such a fantastic opportunity.

  • No surprise there, we all knew the Olympics would provide a sizable stimulus to the economy and housing market.
