Court fine and no idea what it is??

Good morning lovely people i was wondering if anyone could help me? My patner has received a letter through the post this morning from the magistrates courts saying "grant of time to pay" its he owes £80 and must pay by 1st of december 2011, the thing is though is we havent received any fines?? We havent been to court or been caught doing anything naughty!?! It doesnt say what its for and the courts are closed when phoning the number at the top, it does say i can pay online making sure i put division 105 before the account number, ive tried googling this and im still none the wiser, does anyone know what this means or what the proper procedure is? Shouldnt we have received some kind of fine notice first??
Would be greatful for any help as its really doing my head in! I havent got a spare £80 a few weeks before xmas, thankyou xx

  • You will need to speak to the court to find out what it is and whether it's correct.
Has he had any driving penalties he's ignored? TV licence up to date?

Google the phone number in the letter - is it definitely for the court?
I'm just thinking it may be a scam.

Sounds a bit iffy to me too.

Should it read section 105. Instead of division?

A letter from a proper court shouldnt be ropey.

Dont use the telephone number on the form, find the telephone number of the court yourself.

Dont give any bank details over the phone, if its something that does come to mind and you hve to pay go to the court to do it.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • My OH had a letter similar to yours a few years ago, it stated "fine £50" and then went on to state that it must be paid within 7 days, he automaticaly rang the courts as we thought it was a scam aswell. Turned out to be a fine for driving without tax when he was 18 ( tut tut to him i know!) he thought he has paid the whole fine but had missed his last payment, but you would think they would let you know on the letter what the fine was actualy for, especialy when i told him to file it under B for bin as i was os convinced it was a scam :o.
  • Perhaps scan the letter and post it up after taking out all the private details?
