Smelly toilet!

Cleaning under the rim of the toilet is quite difficult with the normal toilet brush so I use a bottle brush. It's thin enough to actually get under the rim. Try using a powder abrasive cleaner such as Vim, sprinkled over the brush and scrub hard.
Dirty boys! How close to the bowl do they have to be before they hit the target, for goodness sake?:rotfl:0 -
'Twas for a reason like this I only showered until I found the OS board. A loo next to the bath, and three boys meant 'aromatherapy' had a whole new slant IYKWIM.
Someone suggested that I use vinegar in the loo - and I'm pleased to say it helps enormously. I simply take the lid off the tank, give it a flush, and when it's nearly empty pour in some vinegar. This means that the last bit to swish under the rim is quite high in the vinegar content.
You probably will need to scrub with vinegar as suggested above first (I'd probably take a scouring pad to it as well and throw away after) - and the new seat will help (I will remember to fill the screw tops with sealent next time - though how they can get it in those holes eludes me)
After that you should find that as long as it's cleaned fairly frequently a flush with vinegar should help to keep the worst of the whiffs at bay..... except for those in the flooring etc as other have mentioned.
Don't be tempted to invest in one of those under the rim gadgets - boys (even the supposedly 'grown up' ones) love to aim at them and before you know it the problem will be worse than you ever imagined it could be!!!!

In our house we have the toilet separate from the bathroom and it is a very small room with a tiny window which only opens about an inch. No matter how many times i clean it and the floor and walls around it, it always has a lingering smell which I can't get rid of. I have tried loads of different air freshners and nothing seems to hid or get rid of the smell, any ideas?
ThanksI would like to be able to admire a man’s opinions as I would his dog - without being expected to take it home with me."

Urine may have got under the floor where the toilet pedestal joins the floor.
My DS is a terrible shot and I have put some sealant around the base of the pedestal to stop it. But I do have to regulary clean around the base with an old toothbrush and some bleach to stop it smelling0 -
my first thought was one of those extractor fans which fit in the glazing of the window - efficient but expensive. personally I would use a nice strong smelling bleach block in the cistern and the toilet bowl. then put some strong pot-pourri in a bowl on top of cistern or on windowsill if you have one wide enough. our loo was in separate room to side of bathroom and i found it a bit whiffy! the prob was solved when we combined toilet and bathroom by taking out the partition wall. we now have two windows - one fairly large. hope this helps!0

How about putting some essential oil on the toilet brush - as this might be the problem - and will stop the brush from smelling. Alternatively get some pieces of foam which you can cut to fit the size of your toilet roll and douse in essential oil. Or you could put some essential oil on the lightbulb (use cotton wool) so the smell comes when the light is on.
Just a few places you can hide some smellies!Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

If you have had a problem with condensation and black mould on the tiles, I find that smells even after you clean the mould. The tip I found on this forum for cleaning grouting was to mix bicarbonate of soda to a sloppy paste with neat bleach in an old cup and scrub it along the grouting with a toothbrush. I used this on the tiled floor of our cloakroom where people had gone in with muddy shoes and nothing seemed to shift the dirt and it's like new again and doesn't have that 'old loo' smell. I think the bicarb was a very effective deodoriser as well as a cleanerIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

Sorry to hear this. We had the same problem in another house and I would go the whole hog and redecorate and refloor, then seal around the base of the pedestal as suggested.
We always buy cheap lino for the bathroom (and someone may have an offcut for a small loo - try Freecycle?) so that we don't feel obliged to keep it too long.0
