Paye?

Hi

I started a new job in September and am very confused with regards to the tax I'm paying. The tax codes keep changing even though my P45 was sent in the first week of work.
How much tax should I pay on £10392? I've used the online calculators but they vary, and as my tax code keeps varying it's hard to know for sure.

Thanks :)

It depends on your tax code! You individual circumstances will chnage your tax code and it is impossible to know your tax code without knowing the in's and out's of any benefits you recieve. The standard personal allowance for everyone is £7479 per annum and you pay 20% on everything over that until around 39k
  • First my tax code was 0T, then 339T then BR!
I get working tax credit and child tax credits, will that make any difference to my paye?

What were the full details on the P45?
Did you sign a P46, if so which option did you select?
Do you have or recently had two jobs at the same time.

Have you asked your payroll dept about this?
  • BR I know is 20% on everything so unless you have already used your tax free allowance you are on the wrong code. If you call inland revenue they could give you advice, or write to ask them to review your tax. Your employer gets a letter to inform them of your tax code.
  • Thanks all

Only have the one job, I don't recall signing a P46, perhaps this is the problem? - I have told the payroll department and they're going to ring on Monday

If you gave your employer a P45 soon after you started then there is no need to complete a P46. What was the tax code on the P45 (i.e. the last tax code you had at your previous job, which you should be able to find on your last pay slip)? Was it 339T or something else? Unless there has been some significant change in your circumstances between finishing the previous job and starting this one I can't see any good reason for the tax code to have changed at all.
  • I was previously on Jobseekers Allowance and before that Income Support as I'm a single parent

Before anyone can advise full details of the P45 including who issued it are needed.
