Frozen peas are a good idea, I think - and spuds can keep a long time if they're stored properly. I think just stocking up in general for the summer and autumn is a good plan if there's any risk of incomes falling substantially.
On the other hand there was good news from the Iranian nuclear talks today, which I know sounds monstrously irrelevant, but could see oil prices fall - which will translate to cheaper petrol and supermarket prices.Grocery challenge September 2022: £230.04/£200

I saw, was very relieved.
Well the weeks just keep flying past, and kids should have been back at school today except dd6 who is tomorrow. However DS13 had to go back to GP and he has antibiotics for a chest infection. DD17 is still poorly and will need to visit GP tomorrow.
DS13 school have rang and been very unpleasant and demanded sick notes etc. Felt like pointing out that its not as though they ever teach him anyway, but left OH to go in and drop stuff off. GP refused a sick note, she said she was not pandering to the whims of some unqualified idiot in an office. So OH dropped an appointment card in and showed the prescription.
They were not impressed, OH said tough he is not coming in sick, he can hardly stand when he coughs and is still very tearful.
I got OH to take me shopping, as tomorrow he is in work, my mum is sick so am supposed to be on my own. Took ages just getting around Ald! and am now so weak I cant stand. OH now calling work to arrange tomorrow off - will lose pay but I can not see any other way.
On the plus side I got a whole weeks shopping and meals planned all for £40, Oh just needs to buy red grapes for DD6 and possibly more bananas, but its a good start.0 -
Mind you train drivers have a cushdy time - lots of leave and a fair amount of money. Bl00dy boring job tho.
Do you think? Driving a train is a very stressful and responsible job, also very lonely and of course devastating when you are the driver of a "one under" situation!I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0 -

Cushdy or boring? THe leave and the pay are quite cushdy but it is also all the things you mention. I just couldn't imagine being stuck up in that cab alone for hours on end looking at endless track. Drive me mad.
One of my friends drives a train, however, and loves it. So to each their own, I guess.I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
My father was a train driver, he did not have anything 'cushty'. Worked shifts for 50 years, and had to take any overtime he could get and two weeks a year off. We did not have a lot of money. His hearing was permanently damaged from the noise in the cab. I remember seeing all the notes from the training he had to do - they had to know every bit of the loco inside out so they could fix it if it broke down! He got free train passes, but had enough of trains so rarely used them. He had several people throw themselves under his train, horrific experiences. The worst was when he had to small children sitting on the line playing. Thankfully he was able to stop in time, but only just. Things must have changed a lot for it to be an easy job now.
Glad that lady was able to make her escape - how many women live in such fear but are not able to do anything about it?
Cat has just disgraced himself at the vets - blood test time is never easy but four of us could not hold him down, so he had to be sedated. Not a good start with a new vet...Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0 -
Mrs C, we had a pooch who would scream and howl as if she was being murdered, if her paws were touched...imagine the vet, a room full of waiting people and their pets, and then vet tries to lift pooch's paw! Me rushing out to go home and get her muzzle so she wouldn't snap either. People looking at me white faces and horrified!
I saw the thread of the woman too, quite triggery for me. The thing is when you are not being physically abused in the traditional sense, the abuse received is slow and insidious you are no longer aware that it's happening. It becomes your new norm. I had no idea until ex left that I had been an abused wife, emotionally and psychologically. Incredible but true.
Been clearing the kitchen today, including the fridge. I found a piece of broccoli that appears to have been there since Noah!0 -
Im feeling pleased as we managed to use up a tin of peas with dinner (not great but good protein) then a tin of rice pudding and a tin of peaches for desert tonight.
OH is doing a freezer inventory so we know exactly where we are food wise. Also need to do the tin cupboard. Have a few tins of coconut milk, so i think a couple of curries are in need, even if to just freeze.
Managed to sell 2 items on Ebay today for £36 which I'm very pleased about.
